How To Make Onion Ring Batter
Heat the Oil: Begin by heating oil in a deep fryer to 365° Fahrenheit. If you don't own a deep fryer, you can add enough oil to a pot to cover your onion rings and fry them that way.
Prepare the batter: Slice your onion into rings. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt and then dip your onion rings in the mixture until they are fully coated. Set the rings aside. If you're using corn starch, try swapping in two tablespoons of cornstarch for flour. This helps the batter get crispy, Sidoti says.
Dip the rings: Whisk the egg and milk into the flour using a fork. Then, dip the floured rings into the batter, fully coating them. Place the rings on a wire rack until the batter stops dripping.
Add bread crumbs: Spread bread crumbs on a flat plate. One at a time, place the rings into the crumbs, scooping extra crumbs over each ring until they are fully coated.
Deep fry: Deep fry the rings a few at a time for two to three minutes or until they turn golden brown. Remove the rings from the fryer or pot and place them on a paper towel to drain. Season with salt and serve immediately.
There are plenty of sauces you can pair with your onion rings. Sidoti recommends dipping onion rings into ranch dressing or spicy mayo. Also consider blue cheese, which can add a sharp tang to the side dish. You can pair your onion rings with a sandwich, burger or even seafood.
